2019 NCTE Annual Convention

Baltimore, MD
November 21-24, 2019

This fall, when we come together in Baltimore, let’s inquire together. Let’s dare to wonder, to be bold and creative in our curiosity. Let’s reawaken our own spirit of inquiry as teachers, leaders, writers, readers, and thinkers.

Aspire to Inspire: On the Occasion of the 20th Anniversary of The Freedom Writers Diary with Erin Gruwell

Wednesday, November 20, 7:30 p.m. – 8:45 p.m.

Join NCTE Secondary Section leaders and author and education activist Erin Gruwell for a discussion about how writing can transform lives.

The event will kick off with a special presentation from the DewMore Baltimore Youth Poetry Team, made up of poets between the ages of 13-19 who live in or around Baltimore City who are passionate about writing, performing and advocating for change in their community.

Then Gruwell will speak from her experiences 20 years after the publication of her best-selling book The Freedom Writers Diary and talk about where the students she wrote about are today. She will answer questions presented by members of the Secondary Section.

After the session Gruwell will have a “meet and greet” where she will be available for photos and book signings. The Freedom Writers Diary will be available for purchase.

This event is free to all Convention badge-holders and we also welcome non-Convention attendees who hold an electronic ticket. In order to get an accurate sense of who will be joining us, we are requesting that everyone (including Convention registrants) sign up for a ticket. Please fill out the brief form below and we will send you a confirmation email with your ticket included. We look forward to learning with you!
